Ocean Connectors

CBOs, Family/Parent Organizations, Youth Organizing & Advisory Groups

The mission of Ocean Connectors is to use migratory marine life to educate, inspire, and connect underserved youth with the Pacific coastal environment. Ocean Connectors works in underserved communities of the U.S. and Mexico where children face major life obstacles, such as low educational achievement, high poverty, health issues, and environmental degradation. Ocean Connectors works to improve educational and environmental conditions through hands-on learning, science inquiry, and career mentorship in the classroom and in the field.

Ocean Connectors provides free outdoor field trips and correlated curricula for students in grades four through seven, so that all youth have an opportunity to experience educational coastal adventures in their own “backyard”. Ocean Connectors uses marine science to motivate and inspire students, improving their academic performance, strengthening their commitment to outdoor activity and stewardship, and providing tools to make informed decisions that protect environmental health. Our interdisciplinary curriculum uses art, geography, language studies, and STEM lessons to support California Common Core, Next Generation Science Standards, and Ocean and Climate Literacy Principles. Ocean Connectors is a San Diego-based fiscal sponsorship project of The Ocean Foundation, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to reversing the trend of destruction to ocean environments worldwide.
